Chair and superintendent will draft proposed evaluation rubric after committee stalemate

Facing a stalemate from a recent special meeting, the Chariho Regional School Committee on Nov. 18 approved a motion directing the chair to work with the superintendent to develop a rubric for evaluating the superintendent and to bring that rubric back to the full committee for discussion and approval.
The motion followed several failed attempts at the special meeting to adopt different revision paths, including having the full committee develop the rubric or forming a committee of members. The chair described the proposal as a "happy medium" after consulting the superintendent and legal counsel; the superintendent said she "loved the idea" of a collaborative draft.
Members debated whether the work should remain within the two leaders' hands, be assigned to a small subcommittee with one representative from each town, or include outside stakeholders such as principals, teachers and administrators. Tyler Champlin urged that any draft brought forward be presented for committee discussion and review ("give us a bite at the apple"). The motion passed; the record shows Jess as the single recorded dissent.
Committee members and the superintendent said they welcome emailed suggestions that will be collected and considered during drafting. The chair indicated that the goal is to present a rubric that aligns with the forthcoming strategic plan and existing superintendent goals for committee review rather than an immediate unilateral adoption.
