The Springfield City Council approved an amended ordinance to authorize a sale/lease agreement with Friends of Robin Roberts Stadium, clearing contractual blanks and naming the nonprofit as the proposed operator. Amendment No. 1 specified the agreement party and inserted a dollar amount ($1) and other contractual commitments from the proposal for the city-owned parcel at 1415 North Grand Avenue East.
Council members praised the effort to rehabilitate the north-end stadium and welcomed plans to host a women’s professional baseball league next summer. "We're super excited... the whole inaugural season," a Friends representative told the council, describing community engagement and youth clinic plans. Alderman Conley noted the agreement included more than $1 million in turf investment and free or reduced-cost clinics for local youth.
Several aldermen asked that the nonprofit continue outreach and community engagement; residents and Friends of Robin Roberts’ board members thanked council members for support. The ordinance, as amended, passed by council voice/roll-call votes with 10 yes and none opposed.
What happens next: The Friends group will finalize the agreement and begin stadium upgrades and program planning ahead of the announced season; the city said it will assemble a committee to help promote the women’s professional baseball league and community events.
Provenance: Discussion, amendment text and citizen remarks appear in council record for agenda item 2025-0422. Vote recorded at the council meeting on Nov. 18, 2025.
