Oakwood’s superintendent told the board on Nov. 10 that a newly formed AI task force met for the first time to establish AI literacy, identify capabilities and limits of large language models, and begin drafting guidance for district use.
“We have an update from our AI committee group, which met for the first time last Tuesday,” the superintendent said, noting the committee is led by Jenna Hill and Matt Sprott and is partnering with ForwardEdge to develop an integration roadmap focused on building AI literacy, growing staff skills, creating AI guidelines and clarifying safe classroom practices. The superintendent emphasized the committee has not produced final policy and that staff learning and comfort is a first step before student-facing implementation.
The board also heard a curriculum presentation introducing a new AP Human Geography course. Teacher Amanda Amer described inquiry-driven instruction, digital mapping and assessment strategies that center student voice and authentic products. “Our guiding question for this course is how does the interconnectedness of people and places influence patterns in our world?” Amer said, explaining units on population, migration, cultural patterns and urban land use.
Students shared projects including a community brochure designed to promote Oakwood, a Google My Maps walking map of local sites, population analysis reports and a prototype “baby box” tied to UN sustainable development goals as a service‑learning idea. Student presenters named Nagisa Yoshida, Gwen Erickson and Kian Wirk explained research methods and product choices; one student noted a timeline of German history that included the fall of the Roman Empire, unification and the Berlin Wall as context for cultural patterns.
Superintendent and trustees praised the student work and presented a certificate recognizing Oakwood Junior High math teacher Karen Lauterbach for receiving the Linda M. Gojek Award from the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
