The Villa Park City Council used part of its Nov. 18 meeting to showcase local volunteerism and upcoming community events.
Ed Carter of the Villa Park Community Services Foundation announced the 27th annual Dry Land Boat Parade will roll through city streets on Sunday, Dec. 14, beginning at 5 p.m. He said registration forms, maps and more information are available at City Hall and on the foundation's website and that the entry fee is $40 per craft. Carter also noted a Santa tour (Dec. 6), a tree-lighting with carolers, and a Hanukkah celebration at City Hall on Dec. 17. He named Jay and Terry Applebaum as this year's grand marshals.
The council presented a certificate to Kayla Chan of Scouting America Troop 691 for her Eagle Scout project — a new podium for the council chambers. Kayla told the council she formed a girls' troop while living in Irvine and chose a Villa Park project to benefit her immediate community.
Mayor Nicole Jones introduced Nancy Swirlsley as the November distinguished citizen, outlining decades of volunteer bookkeeping and service to local school organizations, boosters and philanthropic groups. Orange County Supervisor Don Wagner (representing the supervisor's office) praised Swirlsley's volunteer leadership.
These items were presented to the council as recognitions and announcements; there were no motions or votes attached to the presentations.
