At the Nov. 18 council meeting, Mayor Mark Salinas read a proclamation acknowledging that the City of Hayward occupies the ancestral, unceded lands of the Muwekma Ohlone, and proclaimed Oct. 3, 2025 as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Hayward. Lindsey Vien, Acting Director of Library Services, offered a land acknowledgement and described library programming for Native American Heritage Month. Gloria and Monica Gomez, identified in the meeting as Muwekma Ohlone culture bearers and language keepers, accepted the proclamation and spoke of cultural continuity and teaching traditional knowledge to younger generations.
The proclamation referenced federal recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day in 2021 and local events and museum/arts efforts honoring Ohlone culture. Council members and attendees applauded the recognition and took photographs following remarks.
