Superintendent Gavin told the Rockville Centre Union Free School District Board of Education on Nov. 19 that the district has "successfully secured an additional $125,000 in funding" and another $150,000 from Judy Griffith to support an air-conditioning project the district estimates at about $400,000.
Gavin said a SECRA resolution on the meeting agenda, if approved, would allow district staff and architects to submit project plans to the state for review, which he said the district expects will take "between 2 and 4 weeks." After state approval, Gavin said the district would prepare bidding documents, award the contract and begin work with a target construction window around the April school break, assuming permitting and procurement proceed without delay. "Once that is done, and we have state approval, the next step would be put together a bid, bid the project, award the project, and then after that, it would be get the work done," he said.
Gavin framed the outside support as significant to the project: "We've been able to get a 125,000 from senator Bynow and a $150,000 from Judy Griffith," he said. He did not identify whether the $125,000 and $150,000 are grants, donations or another funding vehicle; he described them as "from outside sources". The superintendent also stated that the district expects to secure additional elements and materials necessary to meet the April timeline but cautioned that the outcome depends on timely state review and a smooth bidding process.
The superintendent's report also highlighted school performances and athletics: Gavin noted the opening night of the district play and congratulated the girls volleyball team for winning Long Island and regional championships and advancing to state semifinals. He highlighted cross-country competitor Fayola Allison's 17th-place finish at the New York State championships and said she earned all-state honors.
No specific vote on the air-conditioning funding was recorded in the minutes beyond the board's consideration of the SECRA resolution on the agenda; the superintendent described the procedural steps that would follow a successful resolution vote.
