Beltrami County delays decision on Minnesota Nuclear Energy Alliance membership, opts to draft letter

Beltrami County commissioners debated whether to signal support for the Minnesota Nuclear Energy Alliance (MNEA) — a coalition seeking to reopen state discussion about nuclear energy as a non-carbon option — but they did not finalize any membership or commitment on Monday.
Commissioner Mark Crossland moved to "join the MNEA" to advance discussion. The chair and other commissioners explained the proposed action was intended as a nonbinding expression of support to lobby the state to lift a moratorium on discussing nuclear energy in Minnesota, not to authorize local projects or spending. "It's basically just getting a coalition of counties and cities...to lobby the state to release the moratorium," the chair said.
Commissioner Sumner objected to moving forward without written materials and questioned whether the county should become affiliated with what he called a "special interest group." Sumner asked how the proposal aligned with the county's mission and said he wanted to see written language before agreeing. "I couldn't see anything...that aligned with the county's mission," Sumner said.
Commissioner Carlson suggested withdrawing the motion and drafting a letter that would allow commissioners time to review language and make changes; he proposed using a Sherburne County letter included in the prior packet as a starting point. Commissioner Crossland withdrew his motion. The board asked Administrator Barry to circulate the Sherburne County draft to members for comment and agreed to bring a revised letter back at a future meeting.
No cash commitment or change in county policy was adopted during the session. Commissioners who spoke in support framed the item as an effort to explore long-term, carbon-free energy alternatives and to protect county constituents from rising electricity costs; those opposed or hesitant asked for clarity on process and alignment before any formal endorsement.
The item was tabled pending a drafted letter and further review.
