The Seward City Council approved a 30-year lease with Seward Public Schools that transfers long-term maintenance responsibilities for Plum Creek Memorial Field to the school district. Greg Butcher presented background, saying the term aligns with the expected lifespan of turf and similar investments and that the school board had already approved the lease.
Butcher described the reciprocal relationship between the city and the school district for use of facilities and explained that the district would assume maintenance of the field, adjacent storage building and batting cages. He said the lease was drafted with city and school legal counsel and recommended by the parks-and-recreation committee. A council member observed that 30 years may seem long but said mechanisms exist to revisit terms if circumstances change.
The council moved to approve the lease and recorded a unanimous vote. The lease is structured to reflect the district’s responsibility for maintenance and closely coordinate maintenance plans between city and school maintenance teams.
