Clark County board approves 2027–28 'orange' school calendar after split community feedback

The Clark County Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the 2027–28 "orange" school calendar following a discussion of two draft options that differ mainly in start and end dates.
Board members and staff explained that surveys of parents, teachers and committee members produced no overwhelming consensus: some respondents favored a shorter first semester and earlier end ("purple"), while others preferred a later start that gives more time in August for open houses and summer activities ("orange"). The district said the options differ by roughly one week in start and end dates; staff noted the district had aimed to ensure either choice allows the school year to end before Memorial Day.
The board considered effects on athletics, fall break alignment with neighboring districts, summer programs and state testing windows. One board member said the earlier-start calendar would give more time for summer academic programs such as literacy camps, while others noted it could compress fall sports and tryouts. Staff added that instructional-day counts are also affected by potential NTI (nontraditional instruction) days and state testing windows.
Miss Hall moved to approve the orange calendar; Miss Thomas seconded the motion. The board voted 5–0 to adopt the orange calendar.
The district did not specify adoption language beyond the calendar choice itself. Staff said they will finalize and publish the adopted calendar and continue to coordinate school-level scheduling and open-house planning.
The board expects the calendar to be posted to district communication channels after final formatting.
