Wayne County commissioners honor the late Commissioner Wayne Aycock with tributes and moment of silence

The Wayne County Board of Commissioners opened its meeting with tributes to Commissioner Wayne Aycock, who died earlier this week. Multiple commissioners and staff remembered Aycock’s long public service, his decades on the local fire department and his role on the board.

Commissioner Bevan Foster offered the invocation and specifically prayed for the "Wayne Aycock family," asking for comfort and strength. Several commissioners spoke in turn, describing Aycock as a "true public servant" and recalling his years of service and personal support to colleagues.

"He was a true leader and a friend to all of us," an unidentified board member said during remarks. Commissioner Harrop recalled shared interests and decades of conversation about tractors, and others described his willingness to step into roles such as county manager when needed.

The board observed a moment of silence in his honor. After a brief closed session later in the meeting, the chair asked county staff to lower the county flags in recognition of Commissioner Aycock’s service. The meeting then adjourned.
