Legislators at the Guam Congress Hall on Thursday presented legislative certificates to volunteers, coaches and sponsors who supported Special Olympics Guam’s badminton season.
An emcee identified in the transcript as the event host opened the ceremony by saying the legislature had prepared certificates sponsored by the members of the 38th Guam Legislature to recognize those who helped with the badminton program. ‘‘We all agree that you guys are worthy of this accommodation,’’ the host said while calling volunteers forward to receive certificates.
Cam Lorenzo, identified in the program as chairman of Special Olympics Guam, traced the program’s origins to 2021. Lorenzo said Special Olympics Guam created a memorandum of understanding with the Guam National Badminton Federation — naming Sandra Lowe and Senardie Lee — that established badminton as part of its annual sports offerings. “We currently have 6 sports and we introduced this sport badminton in our annual program back in 2021,” Lorenzo said.
Vic, who the program described as having spearheaded this year’s event, thanked athletes and volunteers for a 17‑day practice period and acknowledged partner institutions. “Today, I would like to thank the athletes and the volunteers very much for helping out during the 17 day practice session,” Vic said, and gave shout‑outs to Saint John Academy, Academy of Our Lady of Guam and the University of Guam for their support.
The legislature named a range of volunteers and coaches during the ceremony, calling forward individual recipients including Ezekiel Dondoyano, Alec Zhao, Derek Yan, Owen Lin and others. Coaches and trainers recognized during the presentation included Russell Enriquez and Corey Lay; hosts also acknowledged recurring sponsors such as AdStack and the Guam Badminton Center.
Senator Therese Derlahi offered brief remarks of appreciation for the volunteers’ time and coaching and said the legislature plans to share certificates with athletes when schedules allow. “Thank you to all of you who’ve helped to organize this over the years,” the senator said.
Organizers also promoted the Special Olympics Guam softball championship, scheduled for Saturday at Dededo Sports Field with games beginning at 9:00 a.m., and invited the public to volunteer and attend.
The program concluded with group photos and final acknowledgements from the host. No formal votes or legislative actions were recorded during the presentation.
