Board approves routine items, accepts $4,000 soccer donation and moves to executive session on nurses' contract

The Madison Public Schools Board of Education approved a series of routine actions and moved into an executive session Monday evening to discuss a proposed nurses’ collective bargaining agreement.
The board approved the consent agenda and several action items by recorded votes. A donation from the Daniel Hand High School boys soccer boosters of $4,000 to buy parkas for the varsity team was moved, seconded and accepted unanimously. The chair noted the donation was included in the board packet and had athletic director approval.
On policy matters the board voted to waive second readings and approve several items, including changes to family and medical leave (policy 4030.5) to align with state law, a rescind-and-replace of the gifted-and-talented policy (6080.1.0.1), a bylaw change to meeting time/notice (9510) that requires a two‑thirds vote, and a conversion of the homework policy (6154) into a regulation. The board recorded the motion as carrying in the public meeting.
The board also approved a list of surplus equipment for disposal after discussion about recycling procedures and device replacement cycles; staff explained Chromebooks are replaced on a shorter cycle while laptops are replaced around five years. The minutes of prior meetings were approved: the Oct. 28, 2025 minutes passed with a recorded tally of 5 yes, 0 no, 2 abstentions; the Nov. 11 organizational meeting and retreat minutes were carried as recorded.
On the personnel front, the chair said the personnel committee had reached a tentative agreement with the United Public Service Employees Union representing Madison Board of Education nurses (Local 424, Unit 137) for the contract period 07/01/2025–06/30/2028 and asked the board to enter executive session at 7:27 p.m. to discuss contract features with Superintendent Dr. Craig Cook and HR Director Heather Dobson invited. The motion to enter executive session carried 7–0 and the meeting moved out of the public record for that discussion; no public deliberation of contract terms occurred after that point.
The public meeting contained no further board action once the executive session began.
