The Gardner City Council on Nov. 17 approved multiple appropriations from free cash and considered a large repair request for the municipal landfill.
Council approved an order to appropriate $20,196 from free cash to the city's Other Post-Employment Benefits (OPEB) stabilization account. Councilor General Alex said funding the account annually is necessary to help maintain the city's bond rating; the item passed on a roll-call vote recorded by the clerk as 10 'yes' votes.
The council also approved an order appropriating $201,951 from free cash to the Department of Public Works road resurfacing account. The finance committee recommended the measure and a roll-call vote was recorded as 10 'yes' votes.
A separate request for $100,000 from free cash to repair or replace a failed landfill pump was presented. Councilors noted incomplete information in the packet — outstanding questions included total project cost and funding sources — and moved to refer the item back to the Finance Committee for further study and a report. The referral passed by voice vote.
Other finance items placed on file included the mayor's FY26 tax-rate certification and a communication about certified free cash and retained earnings for enterprise accounts.
