During the public-comment portion of the Kane County Public Health Committee's Nov. 19 meeting, Denise Theobald of Geneva criticized recent immigration enforcement and criticized remarks by a board member at the prior meeting.
"ICE is not lawfully doing its job nor its constitutional duties by denying due process, racial profiling, detaining persons with undue force and without judicial warrants," Theobald said, adding that "the constitution protects all persons" and specifically citing the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments.
Theobald also said a board member had characterized all undocumented immigrants as criminals and disputed that portrayal, noting national statistics she cited about recent enforcement operations. She closed by urging Commissioner David Young to resign, saying his conduct toward constituents and other board members was "embarrassing" and urging him to step down for the good of Kane County.
Committee members did not record a formal response during public comment. Later in the meeting, Commissioner David Young spoke about messaging for constituents, saying officials should be "soft, but yet firm" and reiterating that U.S. citizens are not being deported while acknowledging enforcement consequences for those who do not follow immigration rules.
The statements recorded during public comment remain a matter of record; no formal board action on the matters raised occurred during the committee meeting.
