At its regular meeting the Kings Local Board of Education received a construction update from HGC on GMP 6 and GMP 7 for the new high school. The presenter said the GMP 6 package is $150,000 under budget and that cumulative GMPs are $271,000 under budget to date; the board asked questions about schedule and staging.
Bill Bromback of HGC told the Kings Local Board of Education that foundations are in and that structural steel is en route as work continues on the new high school site. "This package that we're presenting for GMP number 6 is $150,000 under budget," Bromback said, and he later summarized cumulative savings: "an accumulative update of $271,000 for all the GMPs on the high school that we've brought forward."
Bromback said the contractor expects the first stair shaft to reach the roof line in about two weeks and described the next critical steps: masonry work for the arena area (which houses locker rooms) and structural-steel erection for the classroom wing. He said crews plan to mobilize roughly eight or nine subcontractors — about 30% of the overall cost — around Dec. 1 so masonry and site electrical work can proceed.
On schedule and weather risks, Bromback said foundations can be placed through winter but that masonry will require protective measures if temperatures fall below about 25 degrees: "you will see tinting into the scaffolding, plastic and heaters and stuff through the winter." He told the board the vendor turnout for bids was strong, with some packages drawing up to eight bidders, and that GMP 7 bids are about 90% through vetting (interviews and scope review).
Board members asked about staging and laydown areas for incoming steel and for parking for construction personnel. Bromback described an existing construction trailer on the west side of the site and a recently added gravel lot east of the bus garage that will accommodate steel laydown; he said additional gravel laydown areas will be added strategically as work progresses.
The board did not take a final vote on GMP 6 during the portion of the meeting covered by this report; the administration presented the package and answered member questions about sequencing, winter protections and mobilization timing. The administration said further board consideration is anticipated at the next meeting when remaining subcontractor packages are finalized.
