County narrows public safety building sites; consultants to provide siting diagrams
Summary
After consultant site visits, commissioners eliminated several Route 1 parcels for a proposed Public Safety Building because of nearby fuel storage, schools and difficult topography; consultants will produce blocking diagrams and siting options for 2–3 candidate parcels.
County staff reported that consultants and county leaders toured multiple candidate parcels for a new Public Safety Building. Several sites were removed from consideration because of proximity to substantial fuel‑holding facilities, a pre‑K/school and challenging topography or sight‑line constraints that would complicate access and DOT curb cuts.
Staff said consultants will prepare blocking diagrams and topographical siting options for two or three parcels that remain viable. Those visualizations will show how a main building, an ancillary storage building, parking and circulation could fit on each parcel and will note zoning setbacks and curb‑cut considerations for Maine Department of Transportation review.
Commissioners asked whether the consultants would provide multiple alternatives to weigh tradeoffs; staff said yes and emphasized that having two or three options will allow the board to compare location benefits, building siting and likely conflicts with neighbors before any purchase or design step.
No formal acquisition decisions were made; the consultants were cleared to proceed with schematic siting work and return with drawings for the board to review.
