Pleasanton council upholds Gulf gas‑station sign design and OKs white uplighting after appeal

The zoning administrator had authority to approve sign design review; council members examined whether the installed branding and canopy complied with Pleasanton’s sign design guidance and whether any work occurred before council review.

Council member Testa moved to not uphold the zoning administrator’s approval, arguing the franchise‑style canopy and bright branding conflicted with the city’s design standards and that some work was installed before council review; Vice Mayor seconded. The motion failed on roll call (Testa and one other member in favor; a majority opposed). Council then voted 3–2 to uphold staff’s recommendation and to permit a white uplight on a corner palm tree subject to the standard building‑permit process; the motion passed with Council members Gaydos, Eicher and Mayor Balch voting in favor and Council members Nybert and Testa opposed.

Staff clarified that the applicant had signed a waiver allowing plan check during the appeal period and that any electrical uplighting would still require a building permit and planning review for lighting standards. The applicant said they had modified the monument face from orange to white per staff feedback and requested the white uplighting to improve the corner’s nighttime appearance.

The council’s action upheld the zoning administrator’s sign design review; the white uplighting was approved by council direction, with staff noting a permit will still be needed and the standard plan‑check and lighting standards will apply.
