The staff member also said an additional $3,750 has been allocated for downtown streetlight banners celebrating America's 250th anniversary and that a draft RFP to solicit art and design will likely appear on the commission's January agenda.
Unidentified Speaker 4 proposed saving roughly two years' worth of arts funding (about $25,000 by the speaker's estimate) to install concrete pads and pedestals for a rotating annual sculpture program, suggesting that small public-art purchases might run about $2,000 apiece and support a dozen rotating pieces. "I would love us to consider, maybe saving up kind of 2 2 ish years of arts money, and then use that to, install a number of concrete pads and pedestals, and then do a... rotating annual sculpture or sculptural works installation," the speaker said.
Unidentified Speaker 5 recommended a youth-directed project to involve young people in design and implementation, centering youth voices. Commissioners also discussed placing art in neighborhood parks to reach underserved corners of Moorhead and suggested features such as artist-decorated benches, little free libraries or small interactive works children could touch and move.
No final funding decisions were made at the meeting; commissioners asked staff to return with a draft RFP for the banner project and to continue planning and outreach so options can be refined before any formal allocations are approved.
