Council member Chris provided an update on the city's employee pay‑comparison work, saying the consultant rebuilt the comparator list and the team settled on five comparable cities plus state municipal data and a private JobsEQ benchmark.
Chris said the five comparator cities are Hill City, Hartshold, Jasper, Fairhope and Calera and that some comparators had not applied a 3% cost‑of‑living adjustment (COLA) to their reported salaries; Chris asked the consultant to correct those items. "I've gotten their initial new numbers back and I've been looking through them and I feel a lot better about it," Chris said, adding that a couple of small fixes remain.
Chris said the city has paid half of the consultant fee and will hold the remaining payment until satisfied with corrected results. He said his goal is to present a proposal by the second council meeting in December and possibly bring it for consideration at the first meeting in January.
Councilors questioned the choice of comparators (one member noted surprise that Fairhope was included because its numbers were higher) and asked whether the restart would add cost; Chris said no additional cost is expected because only half the work has been paid for so far.
