Northampton County committee approves transfers to regional planning agency, sends arts grants to full council

A Northampton County budget amendment committee voted to reallocate county budgeted “future grants” to provide additional funding to the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission (LVPC) and unanimously forwarded a package of arts and tourism grant allocations to the full council.

Committee members approved two separate transfers for the LVPC after extended discussion and close roll-call votes. One motion to move $461,375 from the DCED 'future grants' pool to LVPC passed on a 4–3 vote. Later, a separate proposal to transfer $350,000 from the same 'future grants' line also passed 4–3. The committee also unanimously approved, 7–0, an arts-and-tourism grants package to be presented to the whole council on Dec. 4 and approved an amended $10,000 reallocation to the Wilson Area Links Family Center that passed 7–0.

Why it matters: The LVPC provides regional planning services to municipalities that lack their own planning staff. Council members who supported the transfers said LVPC’s analysis and shared services provide value the county cannot easily replicate.
