HDC Sign Advisory Committee approves several sign replacements, holds 12 Oak Street for master-plan review

A sign representative told the committee the 1 Cherry Street application seeks “a 20 by 32 double sided projecting sign” in Templeton gray and Snowfall white to be mounted at a new east entrance. Committee members noted the proposed sign exceeds the typical 4-square-foot guideline (the committee estimated it equated to about 4.5 square feet), discussed whether to include the negative space within the arch in the measurement, and asked the applicant to confirm the exact physical dimensions. After discussion, members voted to approve the application and submit it for the usual administrative processing.
Charlie of Simple Signs presented two replacement signs at 32 Tomahawk and said the company would replace the existing carved signs in the exact colors, fonts and materials. Commissioners characterized that work as routine maintenance and approved the application.
At 14 Center Street, a representative for the business said Freedman’s on Nantucket will become Nautic’s Nantucket under new ownership and proposed replacing the existing double-sided mahogany sign with the same size, shape and painted forest-green-and-gold design; the committee approved subject to the condition that no additional noncompliant window or freestanding sidewalk signs be added.
The committee initially considered and conditionally approved a wall sign at 12 Oak Street (with a requested black edge banding), but members then asked to consult the property’s master sign plan before finalizing either the wall or a proposed projecting sign. The committee moved to reconsider the prior approval and voted to hold both applications for revisions so staff and commissioners can compare the proposal to the master sign plan and return with updated materials.
Votes on the applications recorded during the meeting were taken verbally; members present voted in favor of the approvals and the hold motions during the live roll calls.
Next steps: applicants for the held items will be asked to submit revisions and the committee directed staff to bring the master sign plan to the next review so the HDC can reassess consistency with the site’s signage framework.
