Tuscaloosa City committee members authorized a 12-month contract, not to exceed $166,000, with the vendor named in the agenda for annual physicals and wellness testing for fire department first responders.
Chief Dell (Speaker 4) told the council the program provides blood work, cardiovascular testing including 12-lead EKG and stress testing, ultrasounding of arteries and cancer-marker screening. "Firefighters across the board...are 1 and a half to 2 times higher risk than the normal population," Chief Dell said, explaining the program’s role in early detection and long-term health monitoring. The presenter said last year 165 firefighters participated and that the service will be offered annually moving forward.
Council members asked whether the service is annual and Chief Dell confirmed it is. The contract was approved by voice vote.
