Designers seeking conceptual feedback on exterior work for the AC Hotel-owned storefronts at 511–517 Park Street were asked to refine awning form, blade-sign proportion and window treatment strategy after a Nov. 20 conceptual review.
Staff and commissioners praised the proposal’s goal to activate the street and supported a well‑detailed marquee if executed sensitively. Commissioners raised objections to the proposed rounded barrel awnings as out of character with the building’s Prairie-influenced massing and recommended squarer, crisper awning profiles. They also expressed concern about opaque graphics that would block glazing; the design team said the glazing was intended to screen restrooms and suggested a recessed shadow box or light-box alternative to retain a window feel while meeting program needs.
On signage, commissioners suggested larger, well-proportioned blade signs if a blade is used, or alternatives that better fit the building’s character. The design team indicated marquee lighting would be static and likely amber-hued bulbs to avoid flashing or color-changing displays. Commissioners asked the team to return with alternative awning sections, scaled blade sign options and a glazing solution that preserves transparency or uses a display/box set-back to keep a storefront read.
Because this was a conceptual review, no action was required; commissioners requested revised design options prior to the next hearing.
