The Milton Planning Commission unanimously recommended RZ2509 on Nov. 20, forwarding proposed sign standards for the Arnold Mill Road Hamlet overlay to City Council.
Robin McDonald, zoning manager, told commissioners the staff recommendation largely mirrors the Birmingham Crossroads overlay sign regulations (structure, face materials, and detailed construction requirements) but adds a limited allowance: one internally illuminated door sign up to 3 square feet using LED or neon tubing, provided it does not blink, flash or animate. Staff said the small illuminated sign is intended to help local small businesses indicate they are open and to encourage visibility in the hamlet’s slower traffic environment.
Commissioners discussed differences between the rural Milton overlay (which does not permit internally illuminated door signs) and the proposed hamlet rules. McDonald said properties outside the two hamlet nodes would default to rural Milton standards; the internally illuminated door sign would be allowed only inside the Arnold Mill Hamlet overlay.
There were no public speakers on this item. Commissioner McNeese moved to recommend RZ2509 as proposed; Commissioner Edwards seconded the motion and the commission voted unanimously to forward the amendment to City Council for final action.
What’s next: Because the amendment changes the text of the Unified Development Code for the Arnold Mill Road Hamlet overlay, the commission’s recommendation and staff report will be transmitted to City Council for final consideration.
