Citrus County marks National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week; cold-weather shelter reports surge

The Citrus County Board of County Commissioners adopted a proclamation recognizing National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week for Nov. 16–20, 2025 after local coalition representatives reported point-in-time counts and school-system figures. Staff read coalition figures that Mid-Florida Homeless Coalition identified 180 households (244 people) as literally homeless earlier in 2025; the Citrus County School District reported 244 students experienced homelessness in the 2024–25 school year.
Representatives from the county’s cold-weather shelter said they were able to open during a recent cold front and served 73 unduplicated individuals. A shelter representative asked community members to support food banks and service providers as demand rises.
Commissioners acknowledged the challenge, highlighted partnerships with local nonprofits and noted the county is updating planning efforts to address housing needs in conjunction with land-use code updates.
What’s next: staff and community partners will continue outreach and will include relevant goals in upcoming comprehensive-plan and land-development-code updates.
