Nantucket Community School expands ESOL, workforce and free childbirth classes with grant support

Alicia Graziade, executive director of the Nantucket Community School, and assistant director Andrea Wolfleff presented a program update outlining five programmatic buckets: childcare and family support, workforce development, youth health and wellness, community health and safety, and language acquisition.
Graziade highlighted new and returning offerings including ESOL classes (75 recent graduates), a new citizenship course requested by ESOL students, an introduction to AI course developed with the district tech director, and an expanded adult education slate (real estate pre‑license, driver training). She said winter registrations will open in early December.
Of particular note, Graziade said the Community School received a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield, written with Community Solutions for Behavioral Health, that will allow childbirth education to be offered free beginning in January; the grant also supports hiring bilingual instructors. The director encouraged committee members to help communicate the Community School’s services to the broader selectboard and town to support ongoing funding discussions.
Committee members praised the breadth of programming and discussed opportunities to present to the selectboard, and the superintendent echoed the program’s importance to the island.
