At the Nov. 20 board meeting, Superintendent Katie Smith and Rebecca Fata presented the district's 2025–26 priorities: climate (safety and social-emotional learning), engagement (instructional opportunities and extracurriculars) and achievement. They discussed how those priorities connect to New York State's New York Inspires initiative and the Board of Regents' July 2025 adoption of a Portrait of a Graduate.
Smith said the district is auditing current practices and consulting outside experts to strengthen safety and student supports. "Our job as a school district is to be constantly evaluating what is working...and then when something isn't working, to address that area of concern and put new plans into place with a feedback loop," she said.
Fata described efforts to develop real-world skills and project-based learning and said the district will form guiding coalitions of teachers and students. Students in grades 6–12 will be invited to a December ThoughtExchange to share memorable learning experiences and describe what makes them feel safe and supported. The district plans to complete a curriculum blueprint by 2026 with course and unit descriptors and hopes to highlight student photos on the online blueprint.
The presentation also noted professional development plans, use of MTSS interventions and the I-Ready platform for diagnostic work, and outreach to regional BOCES and other districts to share practices. The district said it will invite student and community feedback and use themes from those conversations to create "I can" statements tied to the Portrait of a Graduate.
Ending: The board received the presentation and outlined next steps: student and community engagement in December, follow-up with guiding coalitions and continued professional learning; no formal votes were taken on curriculum changes at the Nov. 20 meeting.
