At a meeting, the Bar Association—s board voted to sunset its Continuing Legal Education (CLE) committee after members said the panel had not produced CLEs for years and struggled to recruit volunteers.
Governor Faye moved to dissolve the committee, saying the panel —hasn—t done that in a while— and noting that —of the 18 members of the committee, they can—t get more than a few to volunteer on it—. "So, I will make a motion to sunset the CLE committee," Faye said.
The motion was supported by staff. Education programs manager Shanti Rahu, citing a memo outlining options to work with sections, said she did not see a reason not to sunset the committee —"I don—t see a reason not to sunset it as a staff liaison," Rahu said.
Advancement Director Kevin Placci emphasized the decision was not a reflection on volunteers, saying the committee had —a lost purpose— even as volunteers had provided valuable service. "This is no reflection of the volunteers on the committee," Placci said.
The clerk called a roll call and recorded individual responses. Most named members were recorded voting in favor; Governor Wynne—s response was transcribed as "Not." The clerk then announced, "Motion passes unanimously." The transcript therefore records both a dissent-like response and the clerk—s declaration of a unanimous result.
Staff and section leadership are expected to continue delivering CLE programming through the association—s sections and its CLE department; no separate implementation steps or effective date for the committee—s dissolution were specified in the record.
The meeting moved on after the vote.
