Panel approves release of mineral rights for Friends of Copper Falls State Park parcel

The Ashland County Zoning and Land Planning Committee voted Nov. 20 to approve releasing county-held mineral rights on a 40-acre parcel owned by Friends of Copper Falls State Park so the group can pursue a state stewardship-fund grant.
Staff explained the orange-highlighted parcel lies within Copper Falls State Park and that the stewardship grant required release of the county’s mineral rights. Staff said the county’s prior practice when foreclosing included reserving mineral rights; this parcel was foreclosed and sold in 1966 with mineral rights reserved. Because the parcel lies within the state park, staff recommended releasing the rights to permit the grant and noted the state — not a private party — would hold the mineral rights.
A committee member moved to approve the release; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Staff noted the county board may see the item again for final action depending on county-board procedures.
