Board approves consent agenda and personnel items; emergency transportation contract for out-of-district placement underway

The Sweet Home Central School District board approved a consolidated consent agenda that included special-education and preschool placements, monthly financial reports, disposal of obsolete property (kitchen equipment, textbooks, tech and an older truck), acceptance of donations, two overnight athletic trips, and an emergency transportation contract.

During discussion the board described the emergency contract: a student placed in an out-of-district program requires daily transportation to Hamburg High School and a respite program; the district entered a 30-day emergency contract with Buffalo Transportation Inc. while it evaluates in-house options or prepares a permanent bid process. "We have 30 days," a board speaker said, describing the short-term arrangement while the district considers longer-term solutions.

The board also discussed corrective actions in response to an external audit of extra-classroom accounts. The auditors sampled transactions and recommended procedural changes; the corrective-action plan includes training, ledger controls and a proposal to designate fifth-graders as officers for certain elementary clubs so they can manage basic accounting until they transition to middle school clubs.

Later in the meeting the board considered and approved a slate of personnel items, including retirements, regular and encumbered appointments, leave requests, reinstatements and changes to substitute pay and assignments. A motion to approve the personnel items was moved and seconded and carried by voice vote. The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn into executive session to discuss negotiations and employment history of an individual.
