Several members and volunteers expressed concerns about scale and cost: while one remark was made jokingly about a 50-foot height, others clarified they expected a monument closer to 5 or 6 feet tall with an approximate 3-foot base; the committee agreed to obtain exact dimensions before finalizing a site.
The committee considered three site types: a green-space area near a parking lot, the front portion of the cemetery (closer to Revolutionary War graves), and a corner area referred to as Liberty Park. Members favored placing the memorial along Evening Street or in a 'veterans memorial corridor' to cluster related monuments and to make the site more walkable and accessible. Amber, who spoke during the site discussion, said she preferred Site 3 and agreed to take photos of candidate locations prior to the next events committee meeting.
Members discussed logistical issues including visibility (trees and traffic), parking access (library and Columbus Street parking mentioned), and the need for an accessible walkway rather than a gravel path. Unidentified Speaker (S3) said the city would create a walkway to ensure accessibility for residents and visitors.
The committee also discussed partners and ceremony plans. Unidentified Speaker (S3) said the Delaware County Veterans Commission and the Daughters of the American Revolution expect to be involved in an unveiling. Staff committed to follow-up tasks: asking Ted for monument dimensions and having Alyssa and staff produce scaled layouts for committee review.
No final site selection was made at the meeting. The committee set next steps — site photos, scaled drawings, and dimension confirmation — and reiterated the goal of unveiling the memorial on Veterans Day 2026.
