Mount Pleasant staff present conceptual pool options at Dalewood Park; cost estimate $2.3M–$2.7M, operating costs about $191K/year

City staff presented conceptual designs and preliminary cost estimates for rebuilding a municipal pool at the former Dalewood Park location during the Nov. 4 council meeting.

The Branding Corporation prepared three conceptual layouts ranging roughly 4,000–6,000 square feet. Staff said the price range for a turnkey pool — including bathhouse, office, concessions, fencing and other site work — runs from about $2.3 million up to $2.7 million depending on selected amenities. A large slide alone was estimated to add roughly $375,000 to the price. Staff also outlined estimated annual operating costs of roughly $191,000 (staff noted that figure covers about three months of seasonal operation) and cautioned that enclosed or indoor options would carry materially higher operating expenses.

Councilmembers asked about the potential to host swim teams and generate revenue; staff said layouts are adjustable but observed that pools sized and configured for competitive swim often raise construction costs and deeper basins, which can make payback more difficult. The presenter recommended a formal feasibility study to project potential revenue, operating deficits or surpluses, and help the council evaluate whether and which option to pursue.

Staff also noted potential grant programs (up to about $300,000) and the option to solicit donations. Council did not commit to a preferred design or vote to move forward with construction at the meeting; staff said the next step would be a feasibility study if the council wishes to proceed.
