Committee defers fence-permit ordinance after members question homeowner impact

The Government Operations & Regulations committee on Nov. 18 deferred consideration of an ordinance that would require permits for permanent fencing constructed within Nashville and Davidson County.
Chair introduced BL2025-1115, described in committee as an amendment to chapter 16.04.24 of the Metropolitan Code to require a fence permit. A sponsor-submitted letter requested a one-meeting deferral. Committee members debated whether the ordinance would help homeowners or merely create a fee. Speaker 8 said the measure “doesn’t do anything for the homeowner” and called it a “complete waste of our time,” while other members said the sponsor should be allowed to explain and defend the proposal.
The committee voted to defer the ordinance one meeting to allow the sponsor to address member concerns. No floor action or amendments were adopted in committee at this meeting.
