Oldsmar Fire Rescue honored with National Firefighter Registry gold helmet for full department participation

Oldsmar Fire Rescue received a gold helmet designation from the National Firefighter Registry after 100% of department members completed the registry survey, the council and registry representatives said at the meeting.
Oldsmar Fire Rescue was recognized Nov. 18 with a National Firefighter Registry (NFR) gold helmet designation after every member of the department completed the voluntary registry survey.
An NFR representative explained the registry traces to congressional actions that first authorized firefighter cancer tracking and was reauthorized in 2023; the registry, led by CDC/NIOSH, collects cancer diagnoses and exposure data to better understand risk in the fire service. "With broad participation, the NFR for cancer tracks cancer diagnosis... compares cancer risk among different groups of firefighters," the presenter said.
Oldsmar’s firefighters also emphasized decontamination after fires as a prevention step and accepted the designation in a short ceremony and photograph with council members.
The council and community applauded the department; the award recognizes participation in a national public‑health effort rather than a local policy change.
