Board approves landmark designation and advances a preservation incentive for a South Quincy homeowner

HINSDALE, Ill. — The Hinsdale Board of Trustees approved a second-reading ordinance to designate the R. Harold Zook Home and Studio at KLM Park as a local landmark and moved a homeowner’s preservation incentive request forward on the consent agenda.
Chair Stifler said the Historic Preservation Commission held a public hearing and voted unanimously to recommend local landmark status for the Zook home and studio, citing architectural significance and the building’s association with well-known local architect R. Harold Zook.
Trustee Braden recused himself from the landmark vote, stating he serves as board president of the Hinsdale Historical Society. With the recusal noted, the board approved the designation by roll call.
Separately, homeowner Ali Honti described planned, code-compliant renovations at 42 South Quincy, including window weatherization, a rear addition and interior work. The preservation incentive package recommended by the Historic Preservation Commission includes a property-tax rebate estimated at about $3,400 over five years and a matching grant covering up to 50% of eligible costs to a maximum of $10,000; Honti said the project’s estimated construction cost is $138,500.
The board placed the preservation incentive on the consent agenda; staff said grant funds would be disbursed only after work is complete and reviewed for compliance.
Next steps: the landmark ordinance is adopted; the homeowner’s preservation incentive will be finalized with administrative follow-through and grant payment upon completion and verification of eligible work.
