Granite County to rip out failed asphalt section on Lakeshore Drive, use gravel for winter

Granite County commissioners agreed Nov. 18 to remove a short, failing asphalt segment on Lakeshore Drive and resurface the area with gravel as an emergency maintenance fix.
Road staff described a section of old, chunky millings that has repeatedly failed and said cold patch material is unavailable statewide this season. “We want to tear it up and then put gravel down,” a road supervisor said during the meeting, noting the county would move quickly if crews and material are available. Staff estimated the job would use roughly 160–200 cubic yards of gravel and could be completed in a couple of days before winter conditions set in.
Commissioners discussed costs and material options. Staff contrasted an estimated gravel price of about $16 per ton with recycled asphalt millings priced at roughly $180 per ton, and said the county’s supply of millings is limited and not suitable for the covered stretch. Because the work was characterized as routine maintenance, no formal motion was required; commissioners asked staff to schedule the work for the next Monday–Tuesday time window if weather permits.
The board also discussed related maintenance priorities, including bus routes and other high-use county roads, and asked staff to return cost estimates and final scheduling details if vendor quotes change.
