At the Department of Transportation headquarters, officials ran an annual inclement weather exercise to test traffic management systems, field equipment and staff readiness, speakers said.
The exercise included a deliberate ramp-up of the traffic management center and coordination with road crews. "We launched an inclement weather, exercise where we, ramped up the TMC, our traffic management center, and then paired that alongside of all of our inclement weather equipment to make sure it was running properly," Speaker 2 said. The speaker described the test as a systems-and-staff check rather than a response to a specific storm.
Officials said crews focused on three main objectives: confirming route plans and identifying anomalies before a real event; checking for safety issues in the field; and conducting hands-on training so staff know how to use equipment correctly. "Really, we're looking for a couple of things," Speaker 2 said, adding the agency wanted routes "up to date, and any anomalies that we see that we take care of prior to getting into, the inclement weather event itself."
The drill lasted about four hours. "Following the 4 hour exercise, the crews will return here, compare notes, let them know if there's any surprises or road closures they weren't expecting, and adjust the routes accordingly so when the snow hits, when 62 becomes 26, they will be ready," Speaker 1 said.
The transcript does not specify which Department of Transportation office or jurisdiction conducted the exercise. No formal decisions, votes, ordinances or funding allocations were recorded during the session.
