Council OKs first reading to rezone Atkinson Drive parcels to commercial

The Lufkin City Council approved on first reading a zoning and future land use map amendment for roughly 4.8 acres along Atkinson Drive to change from Residential Medium to Commercial and to reclassify the future land use designation to corridor commercial.
Staff told the council the request was intended to align zoning with the property's existing use by Strickland Plumbing and to allow the existing residential structure fronting Trenton to be used as office space. “The majority of the property is already zoned commercial…The purpose of the request is to align the zoning designation with the current use of the property,” a staff presenter said. Planning and Zoning recommended approval with a condition limiting access from Trenton Street to passenger vehicles; larger delivery trucks would be directed to Atkinson Drive.
A councilmember asked whether the future land use plan amendment would be permanent; staff replied the amendment would remain in place until a new amendment was proposed or the city initiated one. Councilmember (Speaker 7) moved approval and a second was recorded; the mayor called for the vote and announced the motion carries by voice vote.
The request affects multiple CAD property IDs (13982, 13981, and 155787) and will return for subsequent ordinance readings per city ordinance procedures.
