The council heard a first reading on an ordinance to appropriate rainy-day funds to pay for demolition of the Millennium Plaza fountain. Park maintenance director Patrick Boltz said removal—not restoration—was recommended because repair costs were estimated at three to four times the demolition cost; a budgetary quote from an outside contractor was cited at about $160,000.
"None of the bricks are going anywhere. Part of the design will be to once the fountain is removed, we will be adding pavers," Boltz said, adding the city lacks in-house equipment and licensed electricians are required to disconnect electrical and plumbing systems.
Public commenters urged caution. Tommy Kolovic called the earlier fountain installation a poor investment and asked that no more water features be included in future park plans; another resident requested that bricks paid for by families be reclaimed if removed. Council members said the plan will be advertised and brought to a formal public hearing on Dec. 2.
