Board holds open-topics forum; parents, board discuss counseling, rankings and advanced coursework

At the Rye City School District Board of Education meeting on Nov. 18, the board set aside its usual presentation and held a 30-minute open-topics forum, sending board members into small groups with community participants to surface questions and requests for information.
After the groups reconvened, Missus Boyle summarized her table’s discussion. She said a parent with elementary- and high-school children attended mainly to learn how the open-topics forum worked. The table discussed the district’s various programs, the presence of counselors at the elementary level and recent board presentations on the International Baccalaureate (IB) program.
"We talked about counselors available at the elementary level," Missus Boyle said, and the group discussed outreach and support across K–12. Boyle noted that "mister Bushing" has been offering entry interviews with parents and students and encouraged attendees to contact him for a 45-minute to 1-hour meeting. The board also discussed the idea of exit surveys for high school graduates as a way to collect postgraduation data and better inform programming.
Panelists emphasized maintaining a full complement of AP courses in addition to IB diploma-program offerings. "We will continue to maintain a full complement of AP courses in addition to our IB diploma program courses," a board member said, noting the district intends both pathways to coexist because they serve different learners and skills. The group also raised interest in expanding advanced math and science options, including courses such as AP computer science and higher-level physics or math classes where appropriate.
The facilitator thanked community members for attending and noted another open-topics opportunity will be scheduled in the coming months.
The forum produced several information requests the board said it will follow up on, including potential exit-survey implementation and counseling outreach details.
