Pine View students urge changes to student-publications policy; board adopts revisions in Chapter 4 package

Student journalists from Pine View and other schools addressed the Sarasota County School Board on Nov. 18 to urge passage of revisions to student-publications policy 4.51.
A sequence of student speakers — including Ally Chung, Jacob Roche, Ava Leonardz, Dia Pantulu, Andrew Ashby, Madeline Bailey and others — described months of work drafting a policy that they said preserves student editorial voice while clarifying administrative roles and appeals. "This policy will protect our rights to speech while simultaneously ensuring content that is harmful has no place in student publications," said Jacob Roche, describing the collaborative drafting process.
During the board’s discussion of Chapter 4 (curriculum and instruction) policy updates, which included the student-publication revision, a board member praised staff and noted adoption of an AI acceptable-use policy alongside other curriculum updates. After motion and second, the board passed Chapter 4 policies; the transcript records that the motion passed favorably and chapter 4 policies were adopted.
Students asked that the policy remove ambiguity about what can be published and provide a timely appeals process when administrators remove content. Board members acknowledged the students’ work; supporters emphasized the practical benefits of clearer guidelines for both students and administrators. The board approved the package that includes the revised policy 4.51.
