The San Luis City Council voted to approve a professional-services agreement with Core Engineering Group PLLC to design 6th Avenue from Union Street to County 22nd Street.

Thomas Sanchez, city engineer, presented the project scope and cost estimate, saying the design will accommodate a two-lane road with a future center-turn lane, street lighting, a traffic signal at County 22nd and a bridge at the main USBR drain plus a culvert at the East Main Canal. “Their proposal is for $291,455 dollars,” Sanchez said, and he told the council the consultant estimates design completion by June 2027.

Sanchez noted the city currently has $180,000 available from a developer resolution (Resolution 2255) that covered improvements in front of the Esperanza subdivision; the council was told the remainder would be budgeted in the next fiscal year. Councilors moved and seconded the motion to contract with Core Engineering; the motion carried with six ayes and one abstention from Mayor Nieves Bridal.

The engineering department said right-of-way exhibits and ultimate-design preparation are part of the contract, which staff said would allow later work to be phased toward an ultimate two-lane roadway with a center turn lane. No construction funding was approved at the meeting; staff noted that further budget appropriations will be required in later fiscal years.

What happens next: staff will finalize the professional-services agreement and begin design work; council members were told to expect a design schedule that extends into the next budget year.
