Seguin ISD board approves November library book purchases after staff explanation of selection process

The Seguin ISD board unanimously approved the district’s November book list after a district staff presentation about the librarians’ selection process.

Jackie Silvis explained that certified school librarians follow district policy when choosing titles, including requiring at least two positive professional reviews and considering publisher interest‑level guidance so elementary campuses do not order middle‑school‑level material. She said the November list was posted to the district website on Oct. 17, 2025, to allow public review as required under state law and that the district had received no public‑form feedback on that list prior to the vote. "If you get a book and you find something in it that makes you uncomfortable…come talk to us," Silvis told the board, describing vendor tools and cataloging measures the district uses with vendors such as Follett and Perma Bound.

Board member Mister Bright moved to approve the list; Miss Duncan seconded. After additional discussion about the state Reader Act (House Bill 900) and related litigation over publisher ratings, the motion passed by voice vote, 7–0.

Administration noted the district extended its purchasing deadlines and that the board may see additional lists as purchases continue. The approval does not prevent future formal challenges under district policy; speakers and trustees indicated those processes would be used if parents or staff later identify problems with specific titles.
