Students honored for National History Day; student rep urges schedule, library changes

Four Duluth students advanced to National History Day nationals and were recognized by the board. The Duluth Public Schools board recognized students who advanced to National History Day competitions and thanked advisors and families for their support.
Assistant Superintendent Bonds introduced and congratulated the students who qualified: Lila Ronkonen for a project on Wisconsin v. Yoder, Margaret Johnson for a Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Act project, and Analise George and Anya Erickson for a group documentary on community-based mental health models. Bonds told the board that more than 25 district students qualified for the state competition and four moved on to nationals.
In a separate student report, East student representative Dean described a long list of extracurriculars and urged the district to address the structure of 'pause' days, which have reduced uninterrupted class time and limited students' ability to attend multiple clubs. Dean said unpredictable library/media-center hours have cut students’ access to study space and nontextbook reading materials. "I personally haven't checked out a single non textbook from the library this year," the student representative said, calling for more predictable access and clearer scheduling at least a day in advance.
Board members thanked students and advisors, encouraged continued opportunities for board members to attend student events and asked administration to follow up on student scheduling and media-center access.
