Milton accepts $41,438 federal JAG reallocation to buy portable radios; funds must be spent immediately
Summary
Milton police/fire leadership announced receipt of a reallocated DOJ JAG sum (~$41,438.85) that must be encumbered within days; staff recommended accepting the grant now and moving the purchase of five portable radios to consent because the funding deadline precludes waiting for the next meeting.

City staff informed the council that Milton was awarded roughly $41,438.85 in a reallocation from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s (FDLE) JAG grants program. Because this pot of recaptured federal funding must be encumbered quickly, staff asked the council to accept the grant at the workshop so the city could purchase five portable radios before the federal program’s close.
The chief said the city had demonstrated prior effort and partial purchase activity for radio replacement, which FDLE regarded favorably in reallocating funds. Staff emphasized there was no local match or expectation of local funds. Councilors expressed appreciation for the effort and recommended moving acceptance to consent; staff confirmed the funds must be expended before next Wednesday and that the award does not depend on the federal shutdown.
The chief did not provide a detailed inventory of all statewide allocations but estimated Milton received approximately one-third of the available recaptured funds for the state. The purchase of five radios would not draw on city funds.
