State denies National Register listing for Dade City Cemetery; board plans to use experience to improve future nominations

City staff told the Dade City Historic Preservation Advisory Board that the state responded to the cemetery's National Register nomination with a denial letter received Sept. 15, explaining that, as a general rule, cemeteries are not eligible for individual National Register listings unless they are associated with graves of individuals of transcendent importance or meet unusual design or age criteria.

"According to the bureau, the Dade City Cemetery does not meet the criteria of individual listings in the National Register for Historic Places," Miss Bashi said, summarizing the state letter. Staff recounted the application timeline: the city submitted the nomination Aug. 8; the state requested additional information the next day; staff provided requested materials on Sept. 9; and the state issued its denial on Sept. 15.

Board members acknowledged the difficulty of securing cemetery listings. One member suggested more detailed documentation of families and local contributions might strengthen a future nomination. Another member noted that the state's response was not phrased as a conditional review ("if you make these changes, we would reconsider") but was a clear denial.

The board framed the denial as a learning opportunity: members praised volunteers and staff who prepared the nomination and said future submissions could include stronger evidence of notable burials or clearer ties to historic events. Staff uploaded the state letter to the board packet for members to review.

No formal appeal, supplemental application or new deadline was set during the meeting; the board discussed next steps informally and encouraged further documentation and outreach to bolster any future nomination.
