The City Commission approved an extension to the employment agreement of Interim City Manager Andrew Plotkin, with Plotkin saying he would serve through Feb. 1 if the commission so wished.
Commissioners debated managerial communication, the pace of administrative response to commissioners’ questions, and whether the city should hire a more senior, “tough” manager or continue with the interim manager through the upcoming transition. Commissioner Hsu and others asked for more timely responses to requests and for the manager to prioritize water and finance issues; several commissioners asked for a firm timeline and for each commissioner to submit candidate names as part of the selection process.
City attorney and staff described options for a motion for reconsideration and explained the process and timing for bringing items back for a vote. The city manager said he would provide a revised timeline for the hiring process and staff follow-up tasks. Several commissioners warned that hiring a permanent manager would require time for recruitment and onboarding and noted the budgetary implications of paying two managers concurrently.
The commission passed the motion to extend the interim manager’s contract and directed staff to circulate a hiring timeline to the dais.
