In the mayor’s report at the Nov. 18 meeting, Mayor Sumners gave updates on public works and local events intended to support community activities.
Mayor Sumners said Station 32 (the city's fire station on Highway 69) has had exterior updates completed and is being fitted with a new bay and additional living quarters, including four bedrooms; interior work such as framing, storm shelter and electrical remain. "...the exterior of those updates has been erected, the sheeting installed," he said.
On recreation, the council-approved tennis court project met with the contractor last week and is scheduled to break ground Dec. 1; the mayor said the estimated construction time is 12 to 14 months.
The city will clear the Simmons property behind the community center in Melrose Park to remove old buildings and underbrush and prepare the site for city events and future use. The mayor framed the work as preparing for growth and community programming.
Economic development notes included the Valley Post, with Rodney Scott opening on the 25th of the month and other restaurants to follow in the coming weeks. "So we're really excited about Valley Post and we know the what it's gonna bring to the city," the mayor said.
City event staff introduced a new Christmas tradition: a live tree and lighting ceremony on Dec. 6 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., free to the public with activities and performances planned. Community announcements by Ms. Pope listed upcoming library and community events: a Santa visit on Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., a team book club party Dec. 9, and a note that Steam Day was moved because it conflicted with the parade.
The mayor’s updates provided timelines and near-term dates for projects and events, and the meeting moved to community forum remarks before adjourning.
