Fayette council approves routine business, contracts, property purchase and several appointments

At its regular meeting Mayor Norton and council approved minutes, renewed vendor and utility agreements, authorized the purchase process for a small Flag Park parcel, adopted a sales tax holiday resolution and made appointments to the planning commission and boards.
Mayor Norton presided over the Fayette City Council's regular meeting and the body approved a slate of routine items, including minutes, vendor contracts, a property purchase and several board appointments.
The council opened by approving the Oct. 28 regular meeting minutes and the Nov. 3 organizational minutes after motions and seconding from Councilor Wilson, Councilman Herring and Councilman Rogers. Chief Jenkins delivered the police report for October, citing eight wrecks (one on private property), 41 reports and 62 municipal court cases; he also thanked Tract Supply for a $500 donation and congratulated Keontae Brent on a promotion to detective.
On event and procurement business, the council approved a parade permit for the Old Fashioned Christmas festival on Dec. 4, with street closures to begin at 4 p.m. The council also approved renewal of a billing agreement with the Water Works Board (Mayor Norton asked Daniel to take a proposed four-year term to the Water Works board), and approved continuing Fayette's $25,000 annual membership with the Northwest Alabama Economic Development Authority to support industrial-park marketing.
The council approved an annual supply contract with Cintas (referred to in the record as —Centas/Centosh—) after discussion about some service deficiencies and the contract's annual pricing structure. The council adopted Resolution 2025-22 to participate in the severe weather preparedness sales tax holiday scheduled for Feb. 20'22, following a motion by Councilman Morgan and a second by Councilman Harry.
On real estate, Mayor Norton presented a purchase proposal for the Houghton and Perry parcel (Flag Park property) across from city hall with a sale price of $1,600; council approved beginning the purchase process and directed staff to work with the seller.
Personnel and appointments: Council approved promoting Tyler Hayes to sergeant after Chief Taylor's request; the motion to promote was moved by Councilman Morgan and seconded by Councilman Williams. The council unanimously approved (with one abstention noted) the appointment of Floyd Rogers Jr. to the planning commission to fill Alissa Hughes Monroe's vacant seat. Council members were also reminded to nominate representatives to the housing abatement board; Drew Haley was confirmed to represent Ward 1.
Mayor Norton asked the council to set a public hearing for a request from Haley Aldridge and HBC Enterprises; the council voted to advertise a Nov. 25 public hearing at the start of the regular meeting and to consider a follow-up resolution after that hearing.
The meeting closed with routine announcements about upcoming community events, including Christmas at the Park, the Dec. 1 Christmas parade and other civic activities; the council adjourned following a motion by Councilman Wilson.
