The Columbiana senior center told the City Council that federal funding for the senior nutrition program has ended as of Nov. 1 and that short-term funds arranged with Shelby County and partners will keep the program running through the end of the year. Center staff said the facility served about 1,150 meals in October and serves roughly 50 meals per day; the local weekly cost to the city was described as approximately $6,500.
Council and public commenters discussed options to cover needs while longer-term funding is worked out. Suggestions included maintaining and restocking blessing/food boxes around town, coordinating a bagged-meal program for children, partnering with the North Alabama Food Bank and asking volunteer groups (including Girl Scouts) to support bagging or collection drives. Library staff offered to accept donated food and route it to the senior center, and the council said it would share drop-off locations on social media.
Senior center staff cautioned that donated home-cooked food cannot be distributed to vulnerable clients unless prepared in a commercial kitchen; they asked residents to focus donations on shelf-stable items such as powdered milk, sugar, flour, cereal, coffee and tea. Council members and staff discussed auditing meal recipients only if required to save costs and agreed to seek state and county assistance to maintain the program.
No formal funding decision was made at the meeting; council directed staff to compile resources and publicize donation and drop-off points.
